Virtual Reality

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality is a fairly new technology in which a player can participate in a virtually generated world that can be explored. Virtual reality is defined as a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be interacted with by a person. This person is immersed in their virtual world and is able to move objects and perform actions. The technology is primarily used for gaming at the moment, but with further advancements it could be used in an even wider range of applications.

How does it work?

Virtual reality is typically implemented using computers. Systems such as headsets, treadmills, and special gloves are used in the simulation to create an illusion of reality. It is actually quite difficult to achieve a level of realism that is believable. If something is even slightly off, such as a smaller field of view than in reality, it can be noticed. Total immersion, or sense of presence, is the name for when the subject feels completely present in their virtual environment.

Why use it?

For starters, virtual reality has the potential to be something huge on the entertainment market, being used for things such as video games or even films. However, there are some other, more practical applications for the technology, such as architecture, sports, medicine, and the arts. When something is too dangerous or expensive to perform in real life,a simulation in virtual reality would be the next best thing available to us. As the price of virtual reality systems steadily decreases, the applications will only increase, potentially becoming a common household system or an educational tool.
